Although his photo makes him look like a badass, his style is simple. He can drift into a state of euphoria while DJing his own sets. He often smiles to himself behind the decks as if he just figured out the answers to life’s most puzzling questions. That’s not too much of an exaggeration either! As one of our elder statesmen of dance music, he understands the cycles of this cultural movement better than anyone. His staying power is a testament to his ability to remain ahead of the curve. I recently interviewed the man as he began his initial push into this year’s festival season and learned that if you ever want to hang with the dude when he’s not gigging, grab a bike and some gardening gloves.

Hi Benny! Thanks for taking the time to chat with us. We’ve covered you before at Sutra in Costa Mesa, California [featured image]. It’s a small club especially given the massive stages you have played over the course of your long career. What are some things you like about playing small clubs versus massive festival stages?

Festivals just give you a massive energy flow that is incomparable to anything else but clubs also have an intimate crowd connection that you can’t find anywhere else. They are two totally different things, I like them both.

What do you think of RL Grime’s trap re-interpretation of “Satisfaction”? Does it have your approval?

It’s really good. RL Grime aka Clockwork is a great producer and I actually love playing out his remix as it brings new energy to an old track.

Who were your influences coming up in Italy?

Really a lot of DJs and artists have been influential to me locally over the years. Currently there are some great producers coming out of Italy like Congorock, Crookers and Pink Is Punk.

What are you currently excited about right now in the world of dance music?

There are so many incredible artists on the dance scene right now, it’s really healthy. I would have to say Zedd, Tommy Trash and Skrillex are a few of my favorites.

You are one of the more friendly DJs in the business. What do you feel are some other necessary characteristics to be a successful DJ?

Just be true to yourself and develop your own thing.

You’ve headlined Ultra and Coachella so far this year. You tour relentlessly. How do you balance gigging with producing new tracks?

I’ve been playing a lot of North American festivals recently. My cousin Alle is also my producer so I can tour whilst he is in the studio developing ideas which we then discuss by email. It works!

What can we expect from you this year in the way of new music?

A lot of new music, a few surprises, some interesting collaborations and maybe a new album. Who knows :)

If you could go on vacation and do anything other than DJ or produce music, what would you do?

Sounds completely boring but I would just ride bikes, cook and do the gardening. Until that day comes, I will be the one turning up the bass to max!

You began learning the piano since you were simply a toddler and went on to study classical music in your teens. What was it about electronic music that caught your attention? Do you remember what that one song that gave you the epiphany was?

I have many that brought me into this kind of music, but the one was William Orbit‘s “Adagio for Strings”. My background is in classical music and that track was the perfect match between the great melodies of classical music and the powerful beats of dance music. Just perfect for my taste and it was easy for me to decide what kind of music I wanted to produce.

Many non-traditionally trained producers will say that they wish they would have learned the piano or studied classical music in their childhood. You did that, so now that you are all grown up, is there an instrument or a genre of music that you wish you would have learned/studied in greater depth?

I think the piano is probably the most important instrument to learn if you want to make music. It gives you flexibility and allows you to make a full song even if it’s the only instrument you are able to play. At least nowadays technology helps you a lot with any instrument and being able to play a keyboard helped me a lot. Another great one is the guitar, which I love but unfortunately I’m not able to play it. I wish I could have the time to learn it.

While most trance artists use CDJs to perform live, you have chosen to use MIDI controllers. What does the MIDI controller allow you to do that the CDJ does not? Is it that there is more of a performance aspect on a controller vs. what some would say just pressing buttons on a CDJ? What is your preferable weapon of choice?

I wouldn’t say a CDJ allows you to perform live, as there’s no live elements on a CD player beside the play button and speed. For the live show, I mean a live performance where sounds are being played live from real instruments like keyboards and elements of a song can be controlled and modified in real time. The first thing is that I only play my music, the music I make in my studio, which obviously includes remixes as well. This is because I need to prepare a version that suits my live setup. I play from keyboards and I use MIDI controllers to actually control my laptops. The main advantage of playing in this way is that you can improvise and you can play a track in many different ways; you can even change the main melody and that’s what makes each show unique. It’s much more like an electronic music concert than a classic DJ set where you just mix tunes together.

What surprises do you have for us in store this year?

My second artist album, MAGENTA, is being released soon and I’m really excited about it. I have a lot of great collaborations in it with the likes of Ferry Corsten, Aly & Fila, Audrey Gallagher, Eric Lumiere, Shannon Hurley and more. I can’t wait to see people’s reaction. There will be single releases for the next few months with some very interesting remixes too. Besides that I’m expanding my radio show called GO ON AIR, joining new radio stations. I already started planning my next project but it’s too early to talk about it now. Let’s enjoy Magenta for the rest of the year!

If you could describe your fans in one word, what would it be?

Warm

Will there be a unique tour to accompany this album?

We are currently working on it, trying to pack all things together especially because it looks like I will have a very busy season in Ibiza this summer, so we have to work hard in order to make gigs and flights work together.

Arriving on the scene with an immense amount of talent, newcomer Gabillion is poised to be the bridge between the old and new in dance music. His track “Solitude” takes an organic turn, utilizing live instrumentation alongside soaring and melodic synth arrangements. His knowledge of classic musical production is clea, and his sound is comparable to that of Martin Solveig and Porter Robinson. In fact, if Solveig and Robinson had a kid brother, Gabillion would be him. Check out his track below and look out for a future collaboration between Gabillion and The Boat.

Dubfire is a member of the legendary duo Deep Dish and he got his chance to shine at Exchange a few months back. The time has come for the other half, Sharam, to follow up as part of his 6 on 6 tour- 6 cities, 6 hour sets. A part of me thinks that Exchange got permits to stay open until 6 AM just to be LA’s host to this very special event.

Sharam is a pioneer and effortlessly navigates between underground gems and top 20 hits while connecting people through nothing but top-notch, genre-defying productions. Get ready to dance the whole night through and get your tix here.

Surely you have heard of Disclosure by now because they are making huge headway in the international music scene with their ambient tunes and sexy vocals. The two brothers made a big leap from their tour with SBTRKT and Hot Chip last year, receiving praise for every release they’ve put out. Disclosure killed it at Coachella with seemingly more fans showing up to their set than Eric Prydz. No doubt you will be hearing remixes of these young Brits all summer long. Baauer already got his hands on this one titled “You & Me” ft. Eliza Doolittle. It’s sure to get some recognition with these two big names on the track; already approaching 40,000 plays since it dropped 4 hours ago.
